About Mothershead Ranch – North Dakota Premium Beef For Sale

A beef share farm sells quarter, half, and whole beef directly from the ranch, custom-processed to your cut sheet and priced by hanging weight.

At Mothershead Ranch, we raise and individually select each animal for butchering based on their age, body condition, and weight. Our herd is made up of an Angus/Simmental cross which we raise on the North Dakota prairies, just south of the foothills of the Turtle Mountains which straddle the US/Canadian border.

We try to raise our family, crops, and livestock all with the same regenerative principles that we've learned through many years of practice and various forms of education. We never mass medicate our cattle. We are, however, responsible users of antibiotics and herd health vaccines when the situation deems it necessary. We won't allow our cattle to suffer from illness any more than we would let our children or ourselves. Safety and health are two main concerns here, and we have a very strict protocol that we follow to keep any "medicated" animal out of the food chain. If it isn't good enough for us, it isn't good enough for you.

The Angus/Simmental breeds lend themselves well to finishing a nice carcass and great marbling ability to give that wonderful flavor. All animals on our ranch are grass-fed, while we finish those to butcher with small amounts of corn and barley grown by us on our farm.

Buying Guide: Beef Share Farm

A quarter beef typically yields 85-100 pounds of packaged meat and includes a mix of steaks, roasts, ground beef, and specialty cuts. A half beef doubles that. When filling out your cut sheet, consider your cooking habits: if you grill often, prioritize steaks and ask for more than usual. If you braise and slow-cook, ask for more chuck roasts and short ribs. Ground beef typically makes up 30-40% of the total - you can adjust this based on preference.

  • Understand the difference between hanging weight and packaged weight. You pay for hanging weight (before butchering), and you receive roughly 60-70% of that as packaged cuts.
  • Make sure you have adequate freezer space before ordering. A quarter beef takes roughly 4-5 cubic feet of freezer space; a half beef requires 8-10 cubic feet.
  • Ask about the processing cut sheet. You get to specify how your beef is cut - thickness of steaks, roast sizes, ground beef vs. other uses for certain cuts.
  • Clarify the feed protocol. Grass-fed means the animal ate only grass. Grass-finished means it was finished on grass (not grain) before processing. These affect flavor and nutrition.
  • Ask about dry-aging. Many farms offer a dry-aging period before processing, which enhances flavor significantly.
  • Understand the timeline. From the time you put down a deposit, you may wait 2-6 months for your beef to be ready.

Most beef shares are sold in spring for fall delivery, or in fall for spring delivery. Farmers often take deposits starting in late winter or early spring. If you want a beef share for holiday gifts or holiday cooking, place your order by summer. Many farms sell out of their annual inventory well before slaughter date, so early planning is essential.
